about

"'The hard path to peace' is a small wonder that makes me stop for a moment and think." -- Ieva Každailienė

"I love 'Hard path to peace.' The melodies are soaring and it has hidden meaning." -- Cortelyou Kenney

2009-2011.

The Hard Path to Peace is a piano-based melodic story, with jazz drums and upright bass turned modern through midi. The melody came to me in a dream.

In some ways, the wars we fight today are different than those we fought in the past. Disability is more common than death and there is no clear end. Sometimes there is no clear objective. Women work with combat units, even if they aren't assigned to active combat duty. A close female friend of mine took sniper fire while combat driving for the 101st airborne in Iraq. Another served as part of the Human Terrain Team in Afghanistan. This song blends their stories, and critiques Republican and Democratic administrations for different things.

lyrics

*Lyrics*
After the end of leave, fumbling with her fatigue
And little time for talk with my lover in Iraq.
Under the eagle’s beak, let’s live creatively.
Why do we fall for speech and easy talk of peace?
And in the law, a low, where all the killers go
We follow.

Far down the hard path to peace
Are we so quickly appeased?
We wait, we hold to belief
Far down the hard path to peace.

A new tour and no end over Afghanistan
We give a prize for peace while the eagles eat.
And every perfect speech works to our conceit.
And each idea’s end we lost as we slept.
And in this high terrain might you escape
The refrain?

Far down the hard path to peace
Are we so quickly appeased?
Once more, love, unto the breach
Far down the hard path to peace.

Far down the hard path to peace.

New disabilities, folding up her fatigues
We keep a reverent peace ‘til the laying of the wreath.
I’ll deal with my grief, but can’t we choose
Not to believe?

Far down the hard path to peace.
Are we so quickly appeased?
I waste ‘til I lose belief
Far down the hard path to peace.
